Nearby, one can explore the Royal Gobelins Tapestry headquarters (established in 1664, under Colbert, Louis XVI's minister), which is just a few minutes
from the apartment on foot (click for an example of their beautiful work)
Walk up the Avenue des Gobelins around 10 minutes (click to see the avenue des Gobelins)
, and you are in the Latin Quarter, one of the oldest and quaintest areas of central Paris (5th Arrondissement, or district, of Paris). Head directly up the rue Mouffetard, which is the local shopping street filled with cafes and shops.
The rue Mouffetard market street (just 15 min. walk from the apartment to reach this street), leads directly to the Place de la Contrescarp square, which is a fun and lively square with outdoor cafes. From here the Pantheon (where many famous French heroes, such as Victor Hugo, are buried) (click for photo) and the islands, Seine river and Notre Dame are just a 10 minute walk from the Pantheon.
The Place d'Italie metro is very convenient as it is a 2 minute walk from the apartment, and the metro has 2 lines that take you directly (no changing lines) to the Louvre Museum, the Islands and Notre Dame, the Opera, the Eiffel Tower and also to the Arc de Triomphe and avenue des Champs-Elysees. All major attractions in the center of Paris are thus very easy to get to within 15 to 20 minutes without any changing of metros.
There are plenty of cafes, shops and restaurants within quick walking distance of the Place d'Italie apartment. Just one block away ftom the apartment, there is an open-air marche (market) three days a week, with lots of vegetable, cheese, fruit, bread stalls. We have noted many local restaurants to try, as well as the local grocery stores, in an apartment information booklet which is in the apartment, to help guests to know the area. A lively local spot, for example, is the rue Buttes aux Cailles, a local street with many restaurants and cafes, which can be fun in the evenings (10 min walk from the apartment).
